In my opinion this is exactly the goal we wanted to achieve with the free software movement and which many of its naysayers and opponents did not get. :-)

And while talking about OpenStreetMap. Here are two examples from OSM which shows that this effort has so much potentiality in being vastly superior than existing proprietary map data.

The first screenshot is from the area around the city train station Ostkreuz (some 500m from my home):

Noticed those crossed quads connected by grey lines which start in the west of the Lenbachplatz? Those are overhead power lines. So imagine if you want to move within Berlin and want to avoid living besides those, just scan the area with OSM first. :-)

The next example is from the Teufelsberg (a hill) which lies within the Grunewald forest:

Some really hard-working people (perhaps its just one who knows) have mapped all the footways in the forest surrounding the hill. If you look up the same spot on the proprietary Google Maps you will only see a large green area with no ways drawn in.

Well done OpenStreetMap!

Now imagine every place on the planet would have such incredible accuracy and you do not need to sign a contract with anyone to use that data in any way you want: This is what we mean with "free as in freedom".

I had never worked with Jason K before, he always talks so politely that you can't even predict what is his next move, with in few days he got a rocking webpage. We worked on creating logo, with the help of Michael Sandoval and others, we started preparing brochures, wikis, demos etc. Jason took this small dream of Gerald to a state beyond my imagination,

Slowly we started discussing with community and in no time we found greatest and the best contributors like Dirk Behme, Steve sakoman, Nishanth Menon, Koen, Philip, DS2, and so many on Beagle IRC ...

July 15-16th Bridgewater hall

Bristol Wireless took its new revised LTSP suite for 2 days to the Substance Conference in Manchester. The Dell server laptop has been newly installed and the Evo T20 thin clients have been configured on the server, 7 flat screens and 3 laptops made up a suite of 10 machines: it all looks very professional.

After arriving at the venue, the suite went together in about 40 minutes and after a slight delay getting a network cable made and installed; we were running at 9am. The computers were for the delegates to use at break times and they were popular too, with a few people waiting for a machine to become vacant. Delegates used the Linux terminals to log on to Citrix and Novell systems or just checking websites and email through the browser.

The set up gathered a fair amount of interest and I ended up explaining the advantages of thin clients to a few organisations. In particular, the low power use and fan-less silent workstations making saving on air conditioning seemed to strike a chord, as did the fact that only the server needed occasional administration leaving time for ICT improvements instead of the usual constant maintenance cycle of multiple desktops.

Substance are Linux friendly. They make the most of the free tools available to make the most of web functionality. We discussed Drupal, Dapper, CiviCRM and plings, among other technologies.

Hundreds of projects, organizations, and municipalities are rolling out Meraki-based networks, yet few seem to understand that they’re buying a bundled service not just a piece of hardware. Over time, these initiatives will end up paying an unknown amount of money to Meraki just to keep their system running.

Do check out the comments, as Sanjit Biswas (Meraki CEO) answers some of his concerns.

On the other hand, on GovTech.com Sanjit Biswas presents another use case of Meraki’s being deployed in a small town center. In early 2008, Prestonsburg lit up a free Wi-Fi hotzone over a 2-mile corridor running through its downtown core, using 48 outdoor units and 12 indoor units, for a total price of $8500 (including three DSL connections with two years worth of service for $2700). Not too shabby for a local municipality, I guess.

“For Prestonsburg and many other customers, Meraki includes three years of its data center services in the price of the hardware”, Biswas said, “Larger customers can opt for a plan that discounts the hardware, but adds a monthly fee for service”.

So apparently “three years, that’s how long most of our larger customers plan to wait before upgrading to newer radio devices” according to Biswas, but that’s not how I (and Sasha Meinrath) read it.

Things went relatively smoothly after I unplugged 2 of my repeaters. For some reason plugging in 1 gateway and 5 repeaters at the exact same time wouldn’t let some of the repeaters update with new SSIDs. In the end I used 2 gateways and 2 repeaters.

At one point over 40 people were using the WiFi at the same time. The network saw a total of 71 users throughout the day.

I’m looking forward to the better firmware that Open-Mesh is developing on a daily basis. Eventually I’d like to see these things as simple as plug-and-play without having to worry about them checking in.

Too late to call the company for more info, but we did want to note that San Francisco WiMax gear vendor Soma Networks announced Friday that it had secured a new $51 million round of financing, from investors including Daiwa Securities Group, Ridgeway Capital Partners and others.

Soma, whose executives we interviewed as part of our Sidecut Report on WiMax, had told us they would be seeking additional funding to help the company fulfill its big WiMax contract with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), India’s state-owned telecommunications company. The deal with BSNL was announced earlier this year.

For WiMax followers, Soma’s a pretty interesting company — they have been around almost 10 years, starting with wireless mesh technologies before finding their way to WiMax. Privately held, Soma had previously raised around $200 million in financing, but needed a boost to start fulfilling the big BSNL deal.

So what does the investment round say about WiMax? Here’s a quick excerpt from our Sidecut Report on WiMax that quotes company exec Tom Flak:

For several players in the WiMax market, the overnight sensation is something that has been years in the making. “We’ve been waiting a long time for this market to arrive,” said Tom Flak, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of operations at WiMax gear provider Soma Networks of San Francisco. Flak said that Soma, like other WiMax infrastructure players, is bullish on the near-term future, as standards firm up and production prices go down. End-user equipment, Flak said, is now about “half the price” of pre-standard WiMax gear, which should lead to a lot of WiMax activity in 2008. “With WiMax, you can stop wondering if the technology is viable,” Flak said. “It’s really market-share grabbing time.”

Sounds like the investors in Soma’s new round are doing some market-grabbing themselves. Not a surprise to anyone who has read our report, which offered the following as one of its conclusions:

If WiMax delivers on service providers’ plans of being cheap, easy and pervasive, then there are big opportunities today for venture investors, businesses, application and device developers, as well as infrastructure and service-provider players, who still have time to get in ahead of the mass-market adoption part of the curve.

Soma’s other interesting angle is that they are the equipment provider for AT&T’s hush-hush WiMax network in Pahrump, Nev. Want to know more WiMax inside stuff? Order the report.

For some time we already had - thanks to Lorenz Schori! - a very practical plugin: txtinfo.
In this brief HOWTO we are going to discuss how you can use it to extract information from OLSRd about it's view of the net in a very universal way. The txtinfo plugin can serve as basis for many other visualization plugins. I also want to show you how you can use the watch command to debug your OLSR testbed network.

As usual, you can compile it with "make libs; make install_libs" and add it to your olsrd.conf file like this:

LoadPlugin "olsrd_txtinfo.so.0.1"
{
PlParam "port" "8080"
PlParam "Host" "127.0.0.1"
# # PlParam "Net" "192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0"
}

This means the txtinfo plugin will listen to port 8080 and accept connections from localhost.
So what happens now when you connect to port 8080?
I will connect to it via the well known netcat program and give the txtinfo some commands:
